Quick answer
The top day trips from Chengdu are the Leshan Giant Buddha (about 2–2.5 hours by car, the world's largest stone Buddha), Dujiangyan's 2,000-year-old irrigation system paired with Taoist Mount Qingcheng (under an hour away), and for panda fans the quieter Dujiangyan panda base. Mount Emei's Golden Summit is better as an overnight two-day trip. A private car makes any of them easy and door to door.
- Leshan Giant Buddha
- ≈2–2.5 hrs by car; full day
- Dujiangyan + Qingcheng
- Under 1 hr; easy full day
- Dujiangyan panda base
- ≈1 hr; quieter than city base
- Mount Emei
- Best as 2 days / 1 night
- Easiest way
- Private car, door to door
Leshan Giant Buddha
The 71-metre Tang-dynasty Giant Buddha, carved into a cliff where three rivers meet, is the classic day trip. You can walk the cliff-side stairway down to its feet or take a river boat for the full head-on view. By private car it's about 2–2.5 hours each way, door to door; by high-speed rail it's about an hour to Leshan plus local transport. A relaxed full day.
Dujiangyan & Mount Qingcheng
Under an hour from Chengdu, the Dujiangyan irrigation system is a UNESCO World Heritage marvel — built in the 3rd century BC and still watering the Chengdu plain today. Pair it with Mount Qingcheng, a green, misty, temple-dotted mountain considered a birthplace of Taoism, for a calmer day of history and nature. Both are gentle and family-friendly.
Panda day trips
If the in-city Giant Panda Base is sold out or you want a quieter experience, the Dujiangyan panda base (about an hour away) is an excellent alternative and pairs neatly with the irrigation system. It's calmer, greener and still full of pandas.
Mount Emei (two days is better)
Mount Emei, one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, rises to the Golden Summit at about 3,079 m, famous for its sunrise and sea of clouds. You can rush it in a long day, but it truly deserves an overnight on the mountain to catch the dawn. Combine it with Leshan for a classic two-day loop.
- Day 1: Leshan Giant Buddha, then transfer to Mount Emei.
- Overnight near the summit or mid-mountain.
- Day 2: Golden Summit sunrise, then descend and return.
Further afield: Jiuzhaigou (not a day trip)
Northern Sichuan's Jiuzhaigou — the valley of turquoise lakes, waterfalls and snow peaks — is one of China's most beautiful places, but it is emphatically not a day trip. It is roughly a 1.5-hour flight or a long mountain drive from Chengdu and deserves two to four days with an overnight. If it is on your wish list, treat it as a separate mini-trip rather than squeezing it in, and we're happy to help plan the flights, tickets and timing.
Train or private car?
High-speed rail is cheap and fast but needs real-name booking and transfers at each end. A private car is slower on paper but goes door to door from your hotel, keeps your luggage with you, lets you leave early to beat crowds, and removes all the station hassle — the easiest choice for families and tight schedules.
