Why timing matters more than anything
The single biggest factor in a good panda visit is when you arrive. Giant pandas are most active early, when keepers put out bamboo and the air is cool — they climb, tumble and eat. By late morning in warmer months they flop down and sleep, and the base fills with crowds. Arriving at opening (around 07:30) means lively pandas and far fewer people.
Allow two to three hours to walk the leafy enclosures. The newborn nursery (seasonal, usually late summer to autumn) and the red pandas are highlights worth seeking out early before the tour groups arrive.
How the tickets work for foreigners
The entrance ticket is inexpensive — around ¥55 — but getting one is the hard part. Tickets are released a few days in advance, are real-name and tied to your passport, and are capped daily. They routinely sell out, and the official booking channel is a Chinese-only mini-program that frequently rejects foreign passports and non-Chinese payment methods.
- Tickets are usually released a set number of days before each date — set a reminder or ask us.
- Normally one ticket per passport per day.
- Enter by scanning the physical passport you booked with — carry it.
- If the app rejects your passport or payment, that's the step we handle for you.
Getting there
The base is in the north of the city. A taxi or Didi from the centre takes roughly 30–45 minutes depending on traffic; the metro plus a short ride also works. Going early helps with traffic as well as crowds. Inside, electric shuttle carts (small extra fee) save walking between the far enclosures.
Base vs. Dujiangyan panda centre
The in-city Giant Panda Base is the famous one, with the most pandas and the nursery. If it's fully booked, or you want a calmer experience, the Dujiangyan panda base (about an hour away, combinable with the Dujiangyan irrigation system) is a quieter alternative with its own charm. We can help you choose and book either.
